Uses and Applications of Potassium Sucrose Octasulfate

Potassium Sucrose Octasulfate Functions and Uses

Potassium Sucrose Octasulfate as a new excipient has wide applications. For example, in liposomes, it serves as a novel gradient drug-loading excipient, which can stabilize drugs and improve encapsulation efficiency.

In the field of skin care, as a detergent, it can improve skin water balance, inhibit microbial adhesion, degrade the fibrin matrix, stabilize growth factors, protect mucosal epithelium, reduce wound healing time, and has no local or systemic toxicity. It is mainly used for the care and treatment of skin infection injuries and is very positive for the treatment and prevention of pathological scars with significant scar contraction.

In the dental field, Potassium Sucrose Octasulfate is used as a local formulation to prevent and treat diseases of the teeth or tooth-supporting tissues, particularly to prevent and treat inflammation and symptoms related to dental plaque.

Examples of Applications of Potassium Sucrose Octasulfate

Chronic wounds have prolonged inflammation phases, which can increase the concentration of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). High MMP concentrations can destroy growth factors and the extracellular matrix, hindering wound healing. Potassium Sucrose Octasulfate binds to these matrix metalloproteinases, reducing their concentration and thus their adverse effect on wound healing. Potassium octasulfate dressings have previously been proven to improve the healing of other types of chronic wounds, such as venous leg ulcers, and are used as a novel dressing to enhance wound closure in neuro-ischemic ulcers in diabetic foot treatment.

Compositions of Potassium Sucrose Octasulfate [(SOS)-(K)+] and silver octasulfate sucrose[(SOS)-(Ag)+] are used to protect mucosal epithelium by inhibiting microbial adhesion and pathogenic microbial proliferation. The dual mechanism of suppressing adhesion to host cells by Potassium Sucrose Octasulfate and the antimicrobial activity of silver octasulfate sucrose effectively protects mucosal epithelium from microbial colonization, with stronger synergistic protection than each achieves individually. This composition can be particularly used for the prevention and treatment of mucosal diseases involving biofilm-forming microbial strains and can also be used as an antimicrobial surface coating for medical devices. The composition can include other excipients and diluents compatible with silver ions, such as polysaccharides, nonionic surfactants, weak organic acids, highly purified plant extracts, and amino acids, formulated into different preparations for the prevention and treatment of microbial infections.

The combination of N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan and Potassium Sucrose Octasulfate or sodium salt exhibits a hydrophilic synergistic effect. An external composition with these two as active ingredients can effectively absorb and retain moisture, slow down trans-epidermal water loss, and maintain and restore the skin's water balance. It is suitable for pediatric and geriatric fields.
